Description

Amongst The Thorns depicts a young child seated within an aloe plant, surrounded by both softness and sharpness. The image holds a quiet tension between care and vulnerability, beauty and danger.

This work speaks to the experience of young Black boys growing up in environments that are layered and complex. The aloe plant, often associated with healing and protection, also carries thorns. In this piece, those thorns represent a world that can be visually beautiful and full of possibility, while still containing elements that pose real risk and require early awareness.

The child is portrayed with gentleness and dignity, held within the plant rather than overwhelmed by it. The intention is not to dramatize but to invite reflection. It asks the viewer to consider what it means to grow, to be seen, and to be protected in a world that is not always safe or forgiving.

Amongst The Thorns is a piece that carries emotional weight while remaining visually calm.
